The Perfect Weekend in El Chorro: 2 Days Around Caminito del Rey
Two nights in El Chorro: Caminito del Rey, the turquoise lakes, Andalusian villages and one memorable Spanish dinner.
El Chorro is one of those rare places where staying for two nights rewards you far more than a day trip. A long weekend gives you enough time for the main attraction (Caminito del Rey), the lakes, a few authentic Andalusian villages and at least one memorable Spanish dinner. Here's the exact itinerary we recommend to friends visiting from abroad.
Friday Afternoon - Arrival & Sunset
Fly into Málaga Airport, pick up a rental car and drive around 50 minutes inland to El Chorro.
After checking into your accommodation, take some time to relax and enjoy the dramatic scenery that makes this area so special. The cliffs surrounding El Chorro glow beautifully in the late afternoon sun and there are numerous viewpoints along the roads towards Álora and Ardales where you can stop for photos.
For dinner, head to Álora. Taberna del Caminito is one of the best choices for traditional tapas and local wines, while Bar El Gusto offers simple, authentic Andalusian dishes at local prices.
If you're looking for a longer, more relaxed dinner, El Cortijillo de Juan is a great option, combining traditional Spanish cooking with a beautiful setting just outside the town.
Saturday - Caminito del Rey & The Lakes
Today is all about Caminito del Rey.
Book your tickets in advance and aim for a morning entry slot. The earlier you start, the quieter the walk tends to be. The complete experience, including the access path and shuttle bus return, usually takes around four hours.
By early afternoon you'll be ready for lunch.
Where to Eat After Caminito del Rey
Rocabella is one of our favourite spots in the area. Expect excellent meat dishes, generous portions and stunning views over the surrounding countryside.
If you're looking for something more casual, Bar Isabel sits right next to El Chorro train station and the shuttle bus stop. It's perfect for coffee, sandwiches, cold drinks and a quick bite.
For a more relaxed lunch with one of the best views in the area, head to La Garganta, overlooking the gorge and surrounding mountains.
Afternoon at the Lakes
After lunch, drive to the Guadalhorce Lakes near Ardales.
The lakes are one of the hidden gems of Málaga province and a perfect way to cool down after the walk.
Spend the afternoon swimming, relaxing by the water or exploring the shoreline.
If you're feeling more active, kayaking is available during much of the year around the lake area.
As the sun begins to set, return to El Chorro for dinner and a quiet evening.
Sunday - Antequera & El Torcal
No alarm clock today. Enjoy a slow breakfast before heading to Antequera, one of Andalucía's most underrated historic towns.
Start with a visit to the Dolmens of Antequera, a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back thousands of years. The visitor centre and monuments are fascinating, even if archaeology isn't usually your thing.
For lunch, book a table at Arte de Cozina.
Chef Charo Carmona has become famous for reviving forgotten Andalusian recipes and transforming them into one of the most celebrated dining experiences in the region. If you're a food lover, this stop alone is worth the drive.
Before heading back towards Málaga Airport, make a detour through El Torcal de Antequera. The extraordinary limestone formations create one of the most unique landscapes in Spain and are especially beautiful in the late afternoon light.
